Social Enterprise

The Hermanus Rainbow Trust "Social Enterprise"

Introduction

In 2012 the Hermanus Rainbow Trust (HRT) was severely impacted by the NPO “grant funding” crisis caused by the recession, as well as the erratic and unpredictable allocation of “grant funding” by government, businesses, funding agencies and private donors.

After a 13 year successful track record of providing comprehensive health, social and education services and support to hundreds of orphans, vulnerable children and disadvantaged families in the impoverished communities of the Overstrand, there was an urgent need to establish a unique and innovative 5 year sustainability strategy as well as the requirement to reassess the community’s current needs.

Sustainability Strategy (2014-2018)
The NPO Funding Crises prompted the HRT Board of Trustees and Management team to develop and implement a comprehensive 5 year “sustainability strategy” to achieve self-sufficiency by January 2019.

“Social Enterprise”
After extensive research the decision was made to base the sustainability strategy on a “Social Enterprise” (Profit for Purpose) triple bottom line business model, in line with international trends.
A “Social Enterprise” enables the Trust to continue to focus on our 5 main “Community and Social Development” programmes, while establishing commercial business activities. The prime purpose of the business activities is to generate surplus revenue (profits) that will be dedicated to funding the existing “Social Purpose” programmes, thus reducing the dependence on “grant funding” over time. The business activities will also enable us to focus on reducing poverty and some of the horrific consequences of poverty

Fighting Poverty

The extensive research confirmed our position that "Poverty is the root cause of all our social problems and must be eliminated"

To be able to best fight poverty we also re-established our Vision and Mission statements to align with the consequences of poverty and the current needs of the communities that we serve. We have decided to focus our business activities on commercial “Agri-business” and “Agro-processing” activities. This will enable the the “Social Enterprise” to focus on fighting poverty, crime, malnutrition, hunger and child mortality by providing jobs, business opportunities and “food security” to the disadvantaged people living in the Overstrand.
. These activities are well suited to the rural environment that we cover in the Overstrand and offer numerous opportunities to generate the necessary funding for our “social purpose” programmes.

The “Social Enterprise” Business Centre. To achieve all these requirements a comprehensive 5 year master project was developed and launched in January 2014, that focuses on establishing the “Social Enterprise” Business Centre and the integrated business activities.
